welcome

Welcome to "Anne's Algae", my site for phytoplankton pictures. Mostly I have images of marine species but there are also some nice photos from freshwater algae. You can browse images by species name (sorted alphabetically) or by group. So far there's no taxonomic or ecological information - I'd like to keep this a photo/image site. If you are interested in further information, please check the links under "Open Ocean". :)

captains log

The whole thing started out when I began my PhD in phytoplankton ecology at the Helgoland Biological Station (part of the AWI). There, ecologists have taken daily phytoplankton samples from the exact same spot since the 1960's. Not only has the research group a nice set of microscopes but also some cameras to take pictures of tiny stuff. Within weeks, my pictures folder on the hard drive was the largest by several 100 MB ;D Some of those images made it online to this site soon after.

Fortunately, the lab I did my postdoc at also had microscopes to spare and an even better camera. This time, I tried not to use up all the disk space on C: and dragged a small external hard drive around which was just perfect.

Changes from the previous edition:

- English version :)

- new layout: a new coat of paint was really needed here

- cleaned up navigation: I hope it's much more convenient now :)

- reduced amount of photos/species: I decided to only keep the blue and green ones.

- new species: added some freshwater algae

- category "other": abstract photos of beautiful "dirt", dried up water, misc. crystals and lots of similar stuff that usually just goes down the drain after counting a sample.

- drawings: I removed the bacteria. If anyone wants them back, just let me now.

- tutorials: down for the time being. I'm going to update the tut on how to draw a diatom with regard to the new software versions.

- links: updated, added some new ones, got rid of dead ends.
